- Chapter Nine -

The metal bracket came away from the wall, landing on the floor with a heavy clank. Sophie dragged the broken end of the chain towards her, scooping it up off the floor in her hands before standing up. Looking towards the door, checking the noise hadn’t attracted any unwanted attention, she seized the opportunity to escape the room.

Sophie wrapped the chain around her hand a handful of times, pulling it close to her body - all coiled up in order to stop it from clanking around and possibly alerting more people. Job done, she crept towards the open doorway and leaned out into the corridor beyond.

A long barn-house. Doorways, such as the one she was standing in, lining the way to a large, wooden set of double-doors at the far end. The exit? She checked over her shoulder. Behind her was more of the same. Doorways - with no actual doors attached - and another large set of double-doors at the opposite end of the building. On the floor, laying on the side, next to them - the rusted penny farthing the stranger had cycled past on during the night.

Decision made.

Sophie started heading in the opposite direction to the one the stranger had taken; hopeful of decreasing the chances of bumping into him again.

Was it the same man?

After a few steps, she froze. The sound of shuffling coming from one of the rooms she was heading towards. Something large moving on the floor. Sophie glanced back over her shoulder, the penny farthing being the reminder that she couldn’t go in that direction. He had gone that way. She couldn’t.

More shuffling. She turned her head, following the sound of the noise once more. She could only go this way.

What if the man came back in when she was asleep? What if he just left the penny farthing over by the door? Maybe he hadn’t been in the mood to use it again? What if she was walking straight back to where he was?

“Hello?” she whispered loud enough for a person to hear her had they been in the same room but not loud enough to be heard from anyone outside of the old building. If it was the man from the previous night - shuffling around for whatever reason - he’d appear in the doorway and she’d have time to turn and run back in the other direction. Not much of a head-start but better than nothing. Certainly more of a head-start than if she just chanced it and walked over there only to then discover it was him. The shuffling continued but no one called back. “Is there anyone there?” she whispered again. Same volume and same reasonings as before.

Her heart was thumping so hard she could feel each beat in the back of her throat - an uncomfortable feeling. Thump, thump. Thump, thump. Thump, thump. She took a step closer to the source of the noise. Heartbeat not getting any calmer.

“Hello?” Another whisper unanswered.

Sophie froze again. Another look over her shoulder back to the other possible exit.
